Today Sharp Sight Centre is known to be a pioneering force for laser eye surgery in east, west, south Delhi and Ghaziabad in India. The eye hospital was amongst the first few in the country to bring in the technology and its present state of popularity. However, the journey was not that easy for Lasik in Delhi which found its bearing some 4-5 decades back.
Since early 1970’s different surgical procedures have been developed to improve the refractive error (spectacle power) of people and improve their vision without the dependence on spectacles.
With the advent of lasers for these surgical procedures a new era for eye care has unfolded. The excimer laser procedure along with the creation of a small corneal flap “LASIK” (laser assisted in situ kerotomeliusis) is an excellent painless and an accurate procedure for this purpose.
Millions of successful procedures have been performed world wide till date.
What is normal vision?
In a normal eye, the light rays enter through the cornea and are refocused again by the lens of the eye, forming a clear focus of a single point image on the retina (Fig.1). This image is then converted into nerve impulses and sent via the optic nerve to the brain.
In patients with spectacle power (refractive error) there is a defect in the way the light passes into the eye. The light rays do not bend (focus) properly into the eye and instead of focusing on to the retina at a single point source they may:
Focus in front of the retina as happens in myopia or near sightedness (Fig 2.) when the near objects are clear than the distant ones.
Focus behind the retina as happens in hyperopia or farsightedness (Fig. 3) the distant objects being more clear as compared to near.
Or even focus on two different points as happens in astigmatism (cylindrical power) (Fig. 4) when there is generalized blurred vision.
The refractive errors as above usually result from an abnormality in the shape of the cornea or might be due to an inadequate length of the eye itself.
