Glaucoma: The silent thief of sight.
What is Glaucoma?
Glaucoma is a disease that despairs the optic nerve. This nerve is responsible for carrying information from your eye to the brain, so when it gets damaged, there’s a high risk of losing your vision. While experts are still researching to determine the precise cause of glaucoma, the cases are divided into two categories:
- Primary glaucoma – in this type of glaucoma the cause is undefined.
- Secondary glaucoma – there is a known cause of this type, such as diabetes, a tumor, inflammation, or an advanced cataract.
As there are two types of glaucoma categorized on the basis of cases, similarly there are three clinical entities of glaucoma, which depend upon the angle of the anterior chamber of the eye. These are:
Open-Angle Glaucoma (Primary POAG):
- Frequent patchy blind spots in the central vision or side (peripheral) in both eyes.
- Tunnel vision in the advanced stages.
Closed-Angle Glaucoma (Primary CAG)
- Blurred vision
- Severe headache
- Nausea and vomiting
- Eye pain
- Halos around lights
- Eye redness
Mixed-Angle Glaucoma
In this type of glaucoma, a patient may have mixed symptoms of both the above-mentioned Glaucoma i.e. (Primary POAG & Primary CAG).
Doesn’t glaucoma sound quite worrisome by the read till now? Well, here’s the good news, it
can be prevented too.
