The “Walk for Glaucoma Awareness” organised by Sharp Sight Eye Hospital was flagged off from its Swasthya Vihar (East Delhi) hospital. The aim of the event was to create awareness among people about the silent nature of glaucoma, an eye disease where the visual nerve gets damaged because of pressure rise within the eye. The disease has no warning symptoms until it reaches an advanced stage and only an ophthalmologist can detect the condition.
According to Glaucoma specialist at Sharp Sight Dr. Vineet Sehgal, “Due to the irreversible nature of the disease, it is important for people to get screened for glaucoma at an early stage, so as to prevent blindness.”
People above the age of 40, those with diabetes and hypertension or with a family history of glaucoma, or people who had eye injury in the past should definitely get screened for glaucoma for early detection of blindness.
The ophthalmologists and staff of Sharp Sight participated in the awareness walk with vernacular slogans and educational pamphlets. “To make people more aware of this eye disease, we are also conducting free glaucoma tests at all our Sharp Sight hospitals. Besides, we are also offering glaucoma treatment at subsidized rates,” informed Dr Vineet Sehgal.
Positive family history has proven to be a strong risk factor for glaucoma. So if you or anyone in your family has glaucoma get your eyes screened today.
